Bollywood is of course a derivative of the word "Hollywood" (the centre of movie-making in the USA) – the 'B' derives from Bombay (the old name for Mumbai) where the Hindi language film industry is based in India.

The output of the Indian film industry is the largest in the world when you consider the number of movies produced and box office tickets sold.

In terms of language the films are mainly in Hindi, although there are some Urdu words used and more and more English is creeping in both to the script and the songs.

Most of the movies have at least one song-and-dance routine and are usually musicals – although more complex than most Hollywood musicals with plot and action – which demands a great deal from the lead players.

They are often called masala movies – as in the spice mix – meaning a mixture of many things, however some are now breaking the mould in many ways in response to changing audience demands.
